In 2014, the Royal Australian Air Force approached Shoal to undertake an analysis of the Joint Direct Attack Munition Extended Range variant (JDAM-ER). Since JDAM-ER represents the conversion of an unguided bomb into a complex guided one, the extant range safety assessment did not meet range requirements. The Royal Australian Air Force required a range safety analysis to be performed in a compressed timeframe for an upcoming flight test evaluation trial. Shoal, in conjunction with the Defence Science Technology Group, was able to successfully undertake and complete the required analysis, providing range safety products which meet the requirements within the allocated timeframe. These safety products allowed the trial to proceed, avoiding the potential for costly re-scheduling of the trial.
