Navy – SEA 1000 Future Submarine

Background

The Future Submarine project aims to deliver a conventional submarine capability that is regionally dominant whilst being affordable and sustainable. It is considered to be the largest and most complex Defence acquisition Australia has ever undertaken, with the technology complex, sensitive and expensive, and the development of the capability of strategic importance to our nation.

Results

Shoal’s engagement supporting the conceptual design of this capability has involved several engagements, from initial provision of ex-contract technical advice, followed by two design-support contracts. Our work entailed helping the Navy understand the capability context (including what they wanted to achieve), guiding them through scenario-based needs analysis to understand what they needed from the capability, supporting the high-level conceptual design of the required submarine capability system form and function and finally translating this design into a formal engineering specification.
